LRH commences sophisticated BAHA operations

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena observed a rare operation performed for the first time in Sri Lanka on a baby born with hearing impairments at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital by a team of surgeons and the surgery, known as the "BAHA" (Born Anchor Hearing Aids), was successful, the Health Ministry said.
Many babies are born with hearing disorders islandwide and the LRH has taken the initiative to introduce such surgeries in Sri Lanka.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered hospital authorities to commence such operations without delay and the LRH has acceded to the request.
Earlier such operations were available only in Australia or Singapore at a cost of Rs. 16 million.
But, in Sri Lanka, only Rs. 4 million would be needed for equipment and the operation is performed free of charge.
