Over 8,000 city dwellers displaced

Posted on 2:56 PM by DK

About 8,000 people had been displaced in the City by last afternoon due to heavy rains, City Administrator of the Colombo Municipal Council Omar Kamil said yesterday (17). Bloemendhal Road and Armour Street were among the worst affected while roads in Colombo 7, the Galle Road and other approaches to the city were severely hit.
The area surrounding Sugathadasa Stadium was flooded. Offices and businesses were affected and some workers braved the inclement weather and waded through water.
The International Indian Film Awards is to be held at the Sugatadasa Stadium during the first week of June, which is three weeks away. It would draw maximum attention to the area due to the presence of Bollywood stars gracing the event.
The City Administrator said that the Stadium belonged to the Sports Ministry and he was not aware of the situation of equipment that may have been taken to the stadium for the Awards Ceremony next month.
A spokesman for the Municipal Commissioner said that the situation could not be tackled easily. "The whole city is flooded and the gullies are not sufficient for all the stormwater to flow through," he said.
